Where do you start a story? As a writer, that’s an interesting question. I guess another way of phrasing it is “where does the story begin”?
Honestly, I don’t know. It’s different for everything. But it may be the most important question you can ask when writing. Every tale has a beginning and an end, a string of events that lead to a conclusion. Where you choose to begin telling your tale is far more important than when you choose to end it.
It’s the hook that brings your audience in. Knowing the proper moment to begin, to toss your readers in the deep end and expect them to swim is important. There are so many choices for where to start, what incident before the inciting incident do we choose as writers?
The beginning of the story is not always the same thing as the beginning of the book.
